Gas smell at nursing home was reported hours before deadly explosion, report says
The explosion killed three and injured 20 at Bristol Health & Rehab Center hours after a gas leak was reported and before gas flow was fully isolated, NTSB says.
- On Dec. 23, the National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary timeline showing staff reported a gas odor hours before the explosion at 2:15 p.m. at Bristol Health & Rehab Center.
- Work on a meter‑set valve in the basement revealed a leak traced by a utility worker to the gas meter valve; the meter set includes meter, regulator, piping, valves and fittings.
- A PECO worker arrived just before noon and called for backup as a meter services technician arrived about 1:20 p.m., with utility crews on site for much of the three-hour interval before the blast.
- A Peco emergency crew fully isolated the gas at 3:50 p.m., Exelon shut off flow almost two hours after the explosion, and at least two negligence lawsuits were filed against Peco and Saber Healthcare Group.
- The nursing home had recent safety citations, CommuniCare Health Services was fined more than $418,000 in 2024, and Saber Healthcare Group acquired it three weeks before the blast.
