Days after a disputed election, Uganda’s army is on the hunt for opposition leader Bobi Wine

Bobi Wine has evaded the military hunt led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for over 10 days since the disputed election, with raids intensifying and his wife hospitalized, officials said.

  • From hiding in central Uganda, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu taunted the army while Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the army chief and president's son, has been leading the hunt for over 10 days.
  • After the disputed Jan. 15, 2026 vote, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu rejected results declaring President Yoweri Museveni the winner with 71.6%, amid election irregularities including an internet shutdown and biometric voter identification kits failure.
  • On Jan. 23, soldiers raided the couple's house on the outskirts of Kampala, and Barbara Kyagulanyi, wife of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu , was hospitalized for anxiety and bruises after masked men attacked her.
  • Saying his escape proves state weakness, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu appealed to young urban supporters to use legal means to expose government and security forces, raising fears of unrest among Ugandans.
  • President Yoweri Museveni will serve a seventh term that brings him closer to five decades in power, accusing the opposition of fomenting violence, while Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba says Wine is wanted but Chris Baryomunsi says he is free to return.
