David Spade Reveals He Auditioned to Play a ‘Full House’ Lead
Spade said the early audition was one of several near-misses that left him mentally roughed up before his career later broke through.
During a recent Esquire interview, actor David Spade revealed he auditioned early in his career for the role of Joey Gladstone on the ABC sitcom Full House, though he did not land the part.
Reflecting on the rejection, Spade admitted the turmoil of not landing roles "really roughed me up, like mentally," and vaguely recalled a comedic scene where Joey struggled to juggle laundry.
Around the same time, Spade auditioned for a starring role on a police procedural that ran for seven years; had he secured that part, his career would have been vastly different.
Producer Jeff Franklin offered Dave Coulier the role of Joey Gladstone after Coulier also read for the father, Danny Tanner, with Franklin telling him he did a "great job."
When Coulier moved to Los Angeles, he slept on co-star Bob Saget's couch for two weeks before the pair reunited for Full House, cementing a lifelong bond between the cast.
