Daughter Charged After 78-Year-Old Father with Dementia Killed in Pit Bull Attack
Prosecutors say the dog had attacked 2 other people before the fatal mauling, and Campbell could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
On Tuesday, Janna Campbell, 43, pleaded not guilty to voluntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment after her 2-year-old, 117-pound pit bull named Jack mauled and killed her 78-year-old father, Stephen Campbell, at her Essex home.
Before the fatal attack, the Essex Selectboard mandated a muzzle and training restrictions in February after the dog attacked a Meals on Wheels driver and a home health worker, revealing a troubled history.
According to court records, Stephen Campbell allegedly struck the animal with a shoe on March 10; the pit bull was euthanized shortly after the attack, though Janna previously described Jack as protective of the household.
Released on conditions prohibiting her from owning or caring for new dogs, Campbell awaits her next court appearance in late August, where she could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
While dog bites are typically handled in civil court, Roger Kohn of Kohn Rath Law explained this case may be the first in Vermont to elevate gross negligence to criminal charges.
