Daniel Harding to Follow Dudamel as LA Philharmonic Music Director

Harding will begin a six-year term in 2027-28 and expand to 12 weeks a season as the LA Phil adopts a broader leadership model.

  • On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced that British conductor Daniel Harding, 50, is the orchestra's 12th music director, ending three years of speculation after Gustavo Dudamel's August departure to the New York Philharmonic.
  • Dudamel transformed the LA Philharmonic during a tenure starting in 2009, and the orchestra has grown into a behemoth serving diverse communities with far greater innovation than predecessors like Esa-Pekka Salonen, who took the reins in 1992 at 34.
  • Harding returns almost 30 years after his 1997 U.S. professional debut at the Ojai Festival, having won over LA Phil musicians with recent Rachmaninoff programs at Hollywood Bowl, while Phil President and CEO Kim Noltemy said he is "the ideal conductor who could take them to the next level."
  • Rather than a single music director, the LA Philharmonic is adopting an unusual collaborative model with Dudamel as artistic laureate , Esa-Pekka Salonen as creative director , and Anna Handler as conductor-in-residence , with Harding conducting eight weeks initially, expanding to 12 weeks annually.
  • Harding will continue flying Airbus A320s for Air France on European routes about one week monthly and remain music director of Italy's Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia through 2029, while planning to take YOLA on international tour that year.
