'Violent' prisoner due for deportation escapes custody for second time in a week
Daniel Boakye, 21, escaped police custody twice in one week while receiving hospital treatment, prompting arrests and a police manhunt in southeast London, police said.
- Daniel Boakye, 21-year-old prisoner, slipped from custody at West Middlesex University Hospital on 10 February and absconded again while receiving treatment at Lewisham Hospital on Sunday.
- His convictions stem from robberies at knifepoint across London between June 2021 and January 2022, and he was found guilty in 2023 of stealing 115,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
- On Wednesday, officers located and caught Boakye at an address in Thamesmead, southeast London, and four people including a 17-year-old were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
- HM Prison Service said it is urgently working with the Metropolitan Police to investigate the escapes, and the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is reviewing the incident.
- Sky News described Boakye as a 'violent' prisoner with gang affiliations who is due for deportation to Ghana, which government sources say is still being actively pursued.
