Ex-Mayor Sole P.E.I. Liberal Leadership Candidate, Provincial Party Says
The former Summerside mayor is set to lead the party as it rebuilds after Robert Mitchell’s resignation and recent byelection losses.
On Friday, Sept. 4, former Summerside mayor Dan Kutcher became the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party leader-designate after the nomination deadline passed without other candidates. Party president Katie Morello confirmed Kutcher as the sole approved candidate.
The leadership position became vacant in mid-July following the resignation of former party leader Robert Mitchell. Mitchell stepped down after a byelection loss in Cornwall-Meadowbank, his second defeat since taking the helm in October 2025.
Kutcher previously worked as a lawyer, business owner, and policy advisor to the Ontario Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty. He served as Summerside mayor since 2022, resigning last month to pursue the leadership race.
Currently serving as the Official Opposition in the P.E.I. legislature, the Liberals face challenges rebuilding their grassroots structure following their 2019 election loss to the Dennis King-led Progressive Conservatives.
Kutcher will continue to engage with Islanders ahead of the party's leadership convention scheduled for Oct. 25. This convention will formalize his position as Liberal leader.
