St. Albans Creamery & Supply to Close, Dozens to Lose Jobs, DFA Announces
The cooperative said the move is part of broader network changes and will keep a small team on site to support farmers and customers.
On Wednesday, Dairy Farmers of America announced it will close its St. Albans milk processing plant and adjoining store effective August 17, impacting 80 employees at the facility in Franklin County.
DFA described the shuttering as part of broader operational and network changes, emphasizing it is not a reflection of worker performance. The decision follows steady decline in Vermont's regional dairy industry.
Union organizer Curtis Clough said the decision came "out of the blue," leaving workers feeling abandoned after reaching a contract agreement last October. The closure follows recent layoffs by HP Hood and Franklin Foods.
While daily production ends, the cooperative will retain ownership of the site and maintain a "small team" on-site. Farmer-owners across Vermont will have their milk processed within the organization's network in Maine, Massachusetts, and New York.
Vermont Secretary of Agriculture, Food and Markets Anson Tebbetts said he believes "something is going on" with the processing industry. The agency is collaborating with economic development teams to evaluate if the facility can be repurposed.
