Dad Jailed for Shaking Baby Son Blind After Downing 11 Cans
Christopher Yates admitted shaking his seven-month-old son after drinking and taking cocaine, causing injuries doctors said were like a high-speed crash.
On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Christopher Yates was sentenced to four years in prison at Newcastle Crown Court for violently shaking his seven-month-old son, leaving the infant permanently blind and brain-damaged.
Despite known alcohol and drug issues, Yates regained custody of the baby and committed the attack just three weeks and four days after assuming sole care while intoxicated on 11 cans of lager and cocaine.
Following a crying episode, Yates forcefully shook the child five times while shouting "shut the f*** up," then ignored the severely injured infant for hours while retreating to the bathroom with a towel around his head.
Medical experts compared the baby's injuries to high-speed car crashes; the child's foster mother stated, "He has broken his brain, he has broken his life, he has broken everyone's hearts." The infant now faces permanent disabilities and shortened life expectancy.
Judge Julie Clemitson called the effect of the offending "catastrophic," while Detective Sergeant Alan Gibbons of Northumbria Police noted, "It's important those within our communities now know the abhorrent things this man is capable of.
Christopher Yates was sentenced to 4 years in prison for brutally abusing his own child - According to testimonies, the perpetrator had drunk 11 beers and used cocaine, while yelling at the baby to run away
