Homicide Investigation Underway After Woman Found Dead in Salem; Suspect Arrested
Authorities say the woman’s death was ruled a homicide as the suspect awaits a New Hampshire hearing before extradition to Massachusetts.
On Tuesday, Salem police found a 42-year-old woman dead at a Cabot Street residence, prompting authorities to arrest a 50-year-old Salem man Wednesday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on a murder charge.
Responding to a well-being check on Cabot Street Tuesday evening, officers discovered the victim and determined her death was a homicide, prompting authorities to obtain an arrest warrant for the suspect.
Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker's office and Salem Police Chief Lucas J. Miller have withheld both identities pending notification of the woman's next of kin, officials said.
Pending extradition to Massachusetts, the suspect remains in custody in New Hampshire on a fugitive from justice charge and will face arraignment in Salem District Court on the murder charge.
Additional details are expected to be released Thursday, though officials have not disclosed the woman's cause of death or whether any relationship existed between the victim and the suspect.
