Severe Drought Causes Hundreds of Fish to Die in Pond
Moon said hundreds of fish survived as crews cleared a blocked pump and sought an aerator to improve conditions.
Labour MP for Camborne, Redruth, and Hayle Perran Moon visited Heartlands following a local Facebook appeal, meeting resident Bonnie who had been single-handedly aerating the pond since early morning after agencies failed to intervene.
Extremely hot weather, algae buildup, and a partially blocked filtration pump caused the recent fish deaths, compounded by the pond's lack of natural food sources since it was never originally designed to hold fish.
Moon coordinated with Katherine Nissen, chief executive of the Cornwall Rural Community Charity , and a contractor from Lorne Stewart Plc. Resident Cathryn Jupp responded, "Many people appear genuinely to care about these fish."
Lorne Stewart Plc has been asked to provide an aerator quote, while Moon urged the Cornwall Council chief executive to expedite work before the National Trust assumes responsibility later this year.
Long-Term recovery depends on installing an aerator and reintroducing natural food sources like water lilies and rushes. Moon vowed, "I will continue to follow up with all relevant authorities until all necessary changes are made, to ensure the long-term health of the fish.
