Cypherpunk Expands Zcash Bet With $33M Mining Deal
The equity deal gives Cypherpunk 4.2 GSol/s of mining capacity and supports its goal of holding 5% of ZEC supply.
- On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Cypherpunk Technologies Inc. launched Cypherpunk Mining through a $33.33 million equity-based transaction with Winklevoss Capital, creating the world's largest Zcash mining fleet with 4.2 GSol/s of hashrate.
- This expansion follows a sharp rise in ZEC price, which surged more than 1,300% over the past 12 months, as Cypherpunk aims to hold 5% of total ZEC supply through mining economics that now align company treasury incentives with Zcash network security.
- "Up until now, investors have had limited options for Zcash mining exposure. With the acquisition of this mining fleet, Cypherpunk changes that," said Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, with the deal involving warrants issued at $0.77 per share.
- Industry veteran Kevin Zhang joined Cypherpunk as Head of Mining, while Chief Investment Officer Will McEvoy stated the mining flow provides "financial and operational flexibility to fund future growth, the acquisition of additional ZEC, and new privacy-preserving technology investments."
- Zhang noted that "The opportunity in Zcash mining shows a striking similarity to Bitcoin mining in 2016 and provides exciting growth potential for Cypherpunk," as Zcash mining currently out-earns AI colocation and Bitcoin mining at today's prices.
