Michigan Schools Among Those Affected by Canvas Cybersecurity Incident
Instructure said Canvas is fully operational after a breach that ShinyHunters claimed affected 8,950 entities nationwide, including many Michigan schools.
On Friday, the learning management system Canvas resumed operations after a cyberattack disrupted finals for more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Parent company Instructure confirmed the platform is now available for use.
Exploiting the company's "Free-For-Teacher" accounts, the hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach. Instructure subsequently shut down those accounts to resolve the issue.
The hackers claimed nearly 9,000 schools were affected, threatening to leak data if institutions negotiate privately. Instructure states "we have found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information were involved."
Out of an abundance of caution, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University disabled access to the platform. Institutions were forced to seek alternatives for final exams and grade administration.
Federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency , are assisting the investigation. ShinyHunters, previously linked to attacks on Salesforce and Ticketmaster, pride themselves in "rooting your systems since '19.
