- On Thursday, the Central Water Commission formally returned Karnataka's Detailed Project Report for the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir-cum-Drinking Water Project, directing the state to submit a revision compliant with Supreme Court allocations.
- The CWC observed the proposed consumptive water use of 6.95 tmcft exceeds the Supreme Court's 2018 allocation of 6.5 tmcft, while also questioning the determination of the 59.46 tcmft live storage capacity.
- Tamil Nadu officials claim the CWC findings validate long-standing objections to the project, and G Sundarrajan, coordinator of Poovulagin Nanbargal, called the Mekedatu project "a ploy to appropriate maximum quantity of water."
- Despite declining an invitation to inspect catchment areas, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar are scheduled to meet August 3 in Bengaluru to discuss water releases.
- To proceed, Karnataka must revise the DPR in accordance with 2017 CWC appraisal guidelines and address the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award and Supreme Court judgments regarding water allocation.
