Firefighter Survives Lightning Strike One Year After Fireworks Accident
James Lawley said EMTs believed a secondary strike near vehicles may have spared his life after the storm moved in.
Cullman County Firefighter James Lawley survived a secondary lightning strike on Sunday in Alabama after storms moved into the area while his family celebrated his daughter's birthday.
Last year, on the same day, Lawley sustained facial injuries requiring stitches after a firework exploded in his face, marking the second consecutive Fourth of July injury.
Beyond these holiday accidents, Lawley has endured five rounds of chemotherapy since 2021. He told WVTM 13 he is feeling well despite muscle soreness from the strike.
Lawley joked that after these repeated close calls, he may only have four lives remaining, expressing gratitude for surviving what could have been fatal.
For next Fourth of July, Lawley plans to stay wrapped in bubble wrap to avoid a third injury, urging everybody to treat every day like it's their last.
