Crime severity index dropped four per cent last year, Statistics Canada says
CANADA, JUL 22 – Non-violent crimes such as break-ins and motor vehicle theft dropped sharply, driving a 4% decrease in Canada's Crime Severity Index in 2024, Statistics Canada reported.
- Last year, Statistics Canada reported the CSI fell four per cent, reversing three consecutive annual increases.
- Statistics Canada said non-violent crime drove the CSI decline, with the non-violent index falling six per cent and led by five key offences.
- While homicides declined overall, the homicide rate fell four per cent to 1.91 per 100,000, while the share of women killed by intimate partners rose to 42 per cent.
