Crime severity index dropped four per cent last year, Statistics Canada says

CANADA, JUL 22 – Non-violent crimes such as break-ins and motor vehicle theft dropped sharply, driving a 4% decrease in Canada's Crime Severity Index in 2024, Statistics Canada reported.

  • Last year, Statistics Canada reported the CSI fell four per cent, reversing three consecutive annual increases.
  • Statistics Canada said non-violent crime drove the CSI decline, with the non-violent index falling six per cent and led by five key offences.
  • While homicides declined overall, the homicide rate fell four per cent to 1.91 per 100,000, while the share of women killed by intimate partners rose to 42 per cent.
  • From the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Liam McGuinty said `it's pretty clear that we're starting to gain traction`, adding `But it's not time to rest on our laurels`.
  • In a related move, the government released a plan to curb auto theft nationwide, following a summit convened by the federal government last year.
