Crews work to contain petroleum spill in Washington after tanker truck accident
OLYMPIC PENINSULA, WASHINGTON, JUL 19 – About 3,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel spilled into Indian Creek after a tanker crash caused by negligent driving, threatening a recently restored salmon habitat, officials said.
- Along U.S. 101 on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, a tanker truck went off the road Friday, spilling fuel into Indian Creek, tributary of the Elwha River.
- More than a decade ago, two dams were removed from the Elwha River, reopening habitat and enabling salmon returns after tribal efforts.
- Preliminary estimates say about 3,000 gallons spilled, and the City of Port Angeles urged residents to conserve water.
- The Washington State Department of Transportation said part of U.S. 101 shut after the crash, and Gov. Bob Ferguson called it `heartbreaking for local tribes and other Washingtonians who rely on clean, healthy rivers and streams for their food and livelihoods.`
- Biologists warn the river could take at least a generation to recover, and The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe will conduct shoreline assessments today to monitor for environmental impacts.
