Search Crews Looking for 3 Missing Boaters After Pontoon Overturns on Lake Pepin
Three survivors were found clinging to the overturned pontoon, and officials said the search involves boats, drones and helicopters from two states.
A pontoon boat capsized near the Deer Island YMCA Camp on Lake Pepin Saturday night, leaving three people missing after three survivors were found clinging to the overturned vessel.
Pepin County Sheriff Joe Wener confirmed the pontoon collided with a commercial barge on the Mississippi River, prompting a coordinated emergency response from Minnesota and Wisconsin agencies.
Rescuers deployed drones, helicopters, and specialized sonar equipment to conduct a "large-scale search" for the missing boaters, according to a joint release from the Wabasha and Pepin county sheriff's offices.
Wisconsin DNR officials recovered the three missing boaters on Sunday, and the Pepin County Coroner pronounced all three dead, with bodies transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies.
The Wisconsin DNR is leading the investigation into the crash, confirming that no YMCA Camp staff or campers were involved in the incident, while authorities have not released victims' identities pending family notification.
