SpaceX Launches 4 Astronauts to ISS; One Will Miss Birth of His Child
The mission will replace four astronauts on the station and mark SpaceX’s 13th crew launch for NASA.
SpaceX launched NASA's Crew-13 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday following a three-week delay to repair a capsule fuel leak, sending the crew on a six-month mission to the International Space Station.
Commander Jessica Watkins leads the crew, becoming the first Black woman to guide a spaceflight mission to orbit, supported by space newcomers Luke Delaney, Joshua Kutryk, and Sergey Teteryatnikov.
Embracing their Crew-13 designation, the crew incorporated elements of the 1970 Apollo 13 mission into their patch to honor the legacy of previous astronauts, riding to the pad in black Teslas bearing plates reading Lucky 13.
The mission features the quickest transit to the International Space Station to date, with the crew scheduled to arrive in approximately eight hours. They will replace four astronauts stationed there since February.
Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk faces a unique milestone during the six-month mission, as Wife Heather is expected to give birth to their third child in late November while he remains in orbit.
