Skate Canada won’t host Alberta events due to sports gender law

Skate Canada cites Alberta's Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, effective since September, as conflicting with its inclusivity standards, halting hosting of major skating events.

  • On Tuesday, Skate Canada announced it will not host national and international-level events in Alberta after assessing Alberta's Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, which took effect Sept. 1.
  • Bill 29, the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, states the legislation came into effect at the end of September and excludes athletes assigned male at birth from women's sports teams; provincial officials say it is part of a trio of bills introduced last year.
  • Alberta skaters remain eligible for local programs, as the decision only affects national- and international-level events, a spokesperson for Skate Canada said.
  • That change follows Calgary's recent role as host, despite Calgary hosting the 2025-26 Skate Canada Challenge from Nov. 27-30 and the 2024 national championships.
  • Skate Canada said it will continue to monitor legislative developments in the province and will reassess hosting opportunities as circumstances evolve, noting Alberta skaters remain eligible for programs.
