Cowboys' Starting Offensive Tackles Are Trending in Different Directions During Training Camp
Dallas shifted Nate Thomas to right tackle after Terence Steele’s uneven camp, citing his lowest Pro Football Focus grade since his rookie season.
On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys replaced right tackle Terence Steele with backup Nate Thomas during a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints.
Steele signed a restructured $33 million deal this spring but has struggled recently, with offensive coordinator Klayton Adams describing his performance over the past three weeks as "up and down."
Coach Brian Schottenheimer cited Steele's "drop in his pads" and failure to set the edge, while also giving rookie Drew Shelton time at left tackle to evaluate depth options.
The switch prepares Thomas and Shelton for potential swing tackle duties, though Schottenheimer emphasized the program mantra: "compete every day," signaling accountability to Steele.
Left tackle Tyler Guyton has impressed coaches with his progress, and offensive line coach Conor Riley expects continued improvement as the Cowboys shore up depth over the next two weeks.
