Major Change to Leaving Cert Results This Year
Grade enhancements fall to 35.5% as more than 70,000 students receive results and more than 40,000 CAO offers follow next week.
On Friday, over 70,000 students across Ireland received their Leaving Certificate results, with the State Examinations Commission confirming a 1.8% drop in top grades compared to last year.
The government is gradually unwinding post-marking adjustments introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, with only 35% of grades increased this year, down from 52% in 2025 and 68% in 2024.
Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton congratulated the cohort, including 306 students completing new Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes, marking a milestone for inclusive education in the exam's 100-year history.
More than 40,000 students will secure college places through the CAO next Wednesday, though many applicants face competition from over 20,000 who sat exams in previous years.
Education officials remain committed to a 'gradual return to normal leaving cert outcomes,' with the State Examinations Commission expecting full restoration of pre-pandemic standards by 2028 without a sudden cliff-edge.
