- Bello currently faces two separate criminal trials regarding financial misconduct during his 2016 to 2024 tenure as Kogi State governor. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is simultaneously prosecuting him at the Federal High Court on a 19-count charge of laundering N80.2 billion.
- Following the ruling, the court directed the prosecution to proceed with testimony from its 16th witness. The EFCC alleges that diverted funds from the Kogi State Government and local councils were used to acquire luxury properties in Abuja and Dubai.
- Bello has consistently denied all allegations, describing the cases as politically motivated and maintaining that the two trials involve different offences and parties. The court also dismissed a similar application filed by the third defendant.
