Glasgow City Council ordered to pay £80,000 after man hit by falling lamppost
The lamppost was twice its expected lifespan and due for replacement; the council admitted breaching health and safety laws after Colin Shaw suffered severe injuries.
- On Thursday, Glasgow City Council pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work act and was fined 86,000 after a lamppost fell near Kelvinside Academy.
- An investigation found the lamppost was twice its expected life, in poor condition, due for replacement in April 2024, and the March 2022 inspection missed extensive corrosion.
- A passing car caught the lamppost's cable, dragged it over Mr Shaw, who was found conscious but 'screaming in pain,' Prosecutor Richard Brown said.
- The council has allocated 7.5m to replace lighting columns over the coming years, and Glasgow City Council apologised for the incident, saying it will invest in city safety.
- Colin Shaw suffered multiple serious injuries including spine and rib fractures, now has one leg shorter, experiences flashbacks, receives psychological treatment, and other nearby lampposts were inspected.
