Correctional Service Canada says 27-year-old man died in New Brunswick prison
The agency says the death is under review and police and a coroner will investigate because it involved non-natural causes.
Correctional Service Canada confirmed that 27-year-old inmate Ryan Richard died Wednesday at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, New Brunswick.
Richard had been serving a two-year, one-day sentence since August 14, 2024, for convictions of assault with a weapon and extortion.
The agency stated the inmate died of "non-natural causes," though it released few specific details regarding what happened on Wednesday.
In a statement released Friday, Correctional Service Canada noted it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding Richard's death; "the coroner is responsible for determining the official cause of death."
Located about 30 kilometres northwest of Miramichi, New Brunswick, the Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security facility in the rural community of Renous.
