Cornell's reckonings with fraternities haven't prevented misconduct
Authorities reopened a probe after a lawsuit said seven Cornell students assaulted a woman at a Chi Phi fraternity house, prompting renewed scrutiny of Greek-life reforms.
- Authorities reopened an investigation on Monday into the Chi Phi fraternity at Cornell University following a Sept. 16 lawsuit alleging seven students gang-raped a woman in an incident prosecutors previously declined to pursue.
- Cornell University has a long history of Greek system misconduct, including the 2019 death of freshman Antonio Tsialas, whose parents alleged he was hazed with dangerous alcohol consumption by fraternity pledges.
- The lawsuit claims accused students wrote essays to Cornell "to mitigate their conduct." Maha Ibrahim, director at Equal Rights Advocates, called this response "unacceptable," stating there is "no schema where that's an appropriate response to a gang rape."
- In response, the Chi Phi chapter was barred from campus, and its national organization said Wednesday the Cornell chapter unanimously voted to remove the accused members from its rolls within days of the police report.
- Elizabeth Allan, professor at the University of Maine and director of the Hazing Prevention Research Lab, said failed reforms show "how entrenched some of the behaviors are" and institutions need "an approach that's transformative.
