Corb Lund's Alberta anti-coal petition enters homestretch amid separatism
The country singer says he needs about 178,000 signatures to force Alberta to consider a ban on new coal mining in the Rockies.
Country artist Corb Lund is driving a citizen-initiative petition to force a referendum on prohibiting coal mining in Alberta's Eastern Slopes, with a looming June 10th deadline.
Concerns about coal mining peaked in 2020 when the province removed decades-old protections for the Rockies, prompting Lund to seek "firm, robust legislation" to replace inconsistent regulatory approaches.
Lund estimates he has over 3,000 volunteers helping collect signatures; he needs about 178,000 to force the government to consider the ban or trigger a vote.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith supports direct democracy and has acknowledged the petition, suggesting the question could appear on a ballot as early as this fall.
Describing the process as "chaos," Lund expressed doubt about government follow-through, while the province maintains that mining can proceed with strict environmental safeguards.
