Copper Mountain Mine expansion officially opens in Similkameen Valley
Hudbay says the expansion will preserve more than 800 jobs and generate $2.2 billion in labour income as Indigenous bands raise environmental concerns.
- On Tuesday, Hudbay Minerals Inc. officially opened the New Ingerbelle Expansion Project at the Copper Mountain Mine near Princeton, with B.C. Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals Jagrup Brar and Upper Similkameen Indian Band Chief Charles Allison attending.
- British Columbia fast-tracked the project under its Look West economic plan, granting permits in February following a 'robust review process of its application' and recently designating it a priority resource project.
- Hudbay projects the expansion will generate more than $11.5 billion in provincial GDP and support more than 800 jobs beyond 2040, with production of approximately 750,000 tonnes of copper, 900,000 ounces of gold, and 5.5 million ounces of silver.
- Indigenous bands previously expressed pushback over environmental risks near the Similkameen River, with Chief Charles Allison stating, 'We will continue to work to ensure that development respects our stewardship responsibilities.'
- Hudbay signed new agreements with the bands in February, replacing 2019 pacts, as Rob Carter, senior vice president for Canada, described the expansion as reflecting the company's 'long-term commitment to the future of the mine.
