Notorious Paedophile Bill Kenneally Dies in Prison
Bill Kenneally, the 75-year-old convicted sex offender, died in Midlands Prison on Thursday while receiving palliative care for complicated health issues.
Kenneally was serving a 19-year sentence for the historic sexual assault of 15 teenagers in Waterford and had completed 10 years of his term, with release not scheduled until 2030.
His death follows publication last week of a Commission of Investigation report finding a 'clear and serious dereliction of duty' by senior Garda officers in their 1987 investigation of abuse allegations.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan apologized for the 'wholly inadequate' investigation, while victim Jason Clancy described the death as 'more closure' following the report's vindication.
The commission recommended the Law Reform Commission assess 'misconduct in public office' as a separate statutory offence; Minister O'Callaghan has accepted this recommendation to address systemic failures.
