A controversial US-funded hepatitis B vaccine trial involving newborns in Guinea-Bissau has been halted, according to Yapo Boumo, a senior official at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The Guardian reports.
The Guinea-Bissau authorities have terminated a clinical study on hepatitis B vaccine, which was conducted by a team of Danish researchers funded by the US Ministry of Health and planned to deprive newborns of a dose of vaccine. The small state of West Africa has initiated an international debate on medical ethics, national sovereignty and people's trust.
