Contreras to play in at least 1 rehab game before returning to Boston from strained left hamstring
Contreras, batting .274 with a career-high 26 homers, wants one minor league game to test his hamstring before rejoining Boston.
Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras will join Double-A Portland this Friday for a rehab assignment to address his recovery from a strained left hamstring.
Placed on the 10-day injured list on August 31, the 34-year-old Contreras leads the Red Sox in OPS , 26 home runs, and 79 RBIs this season.
Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed the plan includes at least one game on Friday, allowing Contreras to see pitching and move around at first base.
Following the rehab stint, Contreras could return to the Red Sox for Sunday's series finale against the Royals or for the team's three-game series in Texas on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, catcher Adley Rutschman expects to return Friday following a cortisone shot, while left-hander Garrett Crochet will throw a bullpen session over the weekend to continue his recovery.
