In front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a large art installation commemorates the construction of the wall 65 years ago and the subsequent decades of division of the city. On the west side of the landmark, where the border once ran, the 30-metre-long and about three-metre-high metal construction resembles the former wall at first glance.
In the middle of the summer of 1961, by surprise, the communist regime of the GDR erected a separation wall between the east and the west of the German capital. Bernauer Street, where escapes multiplied, was one of the key places.
