Quebec begins consultations on potential revision of greenhouse gas targets
Quebec is halfway to its 2030 goal with a 19% emissions reduction and must balance environmental ambition and economic needs, officials said.
- On Tuesday, consultations began at Quebec's National Assembly as the Transport and Environment Commission opened multi-day sessions to consider revising the province's 2030 GHG target.
- The Act requires Quebec to revise its target by Dec. 31, 2025, prompted by the 2015 Paris Agreement and the province's original 37.5 per cent reduction goal set after 1990.
- Having cut emissions 19 per cent since 1990, Environment Minister Bernard Drainville said completing the remaining reductions within a five-year time horizon is a considerable challenge.
- Alain Webster, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Climate Change, will be among the first to speak Tuesday and is expected to argue Quebec should not back down, citing recent recommendations urging higher targets.
- Minister Bernard Drainville said any new target must be ambitious yet realistic, balancing climate action with economy and jobs, while Nature Quebec general director assured the province has tools for transition.
