Construction Worker Confronted by Men Linked to Bikie Gang, CFMEU Inquiry Hears
Inquiry evidence says Host flew three Melbourne Comancheros to confront a CFMEU delegate after BMD hired the firm for site security.
On June 5, 2024, crane operator Cody Raymond was threatened by three Comancheros bikies at the $353 million Centenary Bridge upgrade project in Brisbane. The inquiry heard the men told Raymond they would "f---ing burn your house down" and kill his children.
BMD Group hired security firm Host to counter aggressive CFMEU tactics at the construction site, yet the firm recruited three Melbourne Comancheros to confront Raymond. Evidence showed BMD executives communicated with Host's Gary Samuel as he transported the gang members.
CCTV and phone records revealed BMD executives led the bikie trio about 80 metres toward Raymond's crane before the confrontation. BMD General Manager Rob Pickard denied knowledge of the incident, though he later offered Raymond security services.
Earlier, former Queensland CFMEU boss Michael Ravbar wrote to the police commissioner on May 10, 2024, accusing officers of "breaching, or coming perilously close to breaching" the Fair Work Act. Ravbar alleged the union was considering litigation.
These revelations at the Queensland inquiry offer a glimpse into what may emerge at the upcoming Victorian royal commission. The current probe continues examining the Centenary Bridge project and the state's industry conditions policy, dubbed the "CFMEU tax.
