Are the two future EPR2 reactors that EDF wants to build by the North Sea too heavy for the sandy terrain that is there? In a harsh tone, the Nuclear Safety Authority asks industry for alternatives, its solutions being too complex.
An opinion of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority underlines "the great complexity" and the lack of robustness of the electrician's plan to strengthen the soil on which two EPR2 are to be built.
The ASNR, the nuclear safety authority, asks EDF to prove that its soil reinforcement system is safe for the construction of the two future reactors at Gravelines. In an opinion dated 23 July 2025, ASNR raised concerns about the robustness of the system proposed by EDF.
EDF will have to revise its plan for its EPR2 project in Gravelines (Nord). In an opinion dated July 23 and made public on October 16, the French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR) warned that the project to reinforce the ground at the Gravelines site, essential to accommodate the two reactors, is currently "unsatisfactory."
