Construction Output Decline Slows in July

S&P Global said confidence improved as firms reported a turnaround in client demand and slower job cuts, even as activity stayed below 50.

  • The UK construction PMI rose to 44.7 in July, up from 38.4 in June, according to the latest Survey. Any reading below the 50.0 threshold indicates the industry is contracting.
  • Slumping activity has affected all subsectors, with conditions worsening since the start of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The industry has recorded monthly declines every month since January 2025.
  • Tim Moore, economics director at Global Market Intelligence, said the industry "has started to stabilise after a sharp downturn." Input price inflation eased, though Firms continued reporting higher costs.
  • Confidence among construction Firms improved last month, with Some reporting a recent revival in opportunities for new work including commercial development and transport infrastructure.
  • Business activity levels continued declining across all three main categories, though the rate of contraction slowed considerably from June. Firms also continued job-cutting but at a reduced pace.
