Nigeria: Constitution Review - Senate Panel Receives 49 New States, LGAs Requests, Begins Public Hearings
- From July 4 to 5, 2025, the Nigerian Senate conducted simultaneous public hearings across the six geopolitical zones to gather input on the review of the 1999 Constitution.
- The hearing followed a history of unresolved constitutional reforms and increased insecurity, with renewed pressure for state police and new states creation.
- A parliamentary panel reviewing the constitution has received 31 submissions advocating for the establishment of new states and 18 proposals seeking the creation of additional local government areas, as well as recommendations related to security and electoral reforms.
- Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that the proposals aim to amend the derivation method to account for additional internally generated revenues by each state across the Federation.
- Following the hearings, the committee will analyze the input received, prepare recommendations, and begin the process of proposing amendments aimed at strengthening state autonomy, enhancing security provisions, and increasing citizen involvement in governance.
