June Consistory to Focus on Just War, International Affairs, and 'Magnifica Humanitas'
Cardinals will discuss global conflict, local churches and Synod implementation, with war-affected prelates sharing pastoral concerns and peace priorities.
- Pope Leo XIV convened an extraordinary consistory for June 26, 27, and 29, Vatican media announced yesterday. The gathering will address the international situation, the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, and Synod implementation.
- Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, stated the meeting serves as "a space of mutual listening, discernment and shared reflection." Participants will bring experiences from local Churches.
- Sessions will explore Magnifica Humanitas, addressing "polarisation, violence and growing conflict" in the world. Cardinals will discuss the "overcoming of the theory of the just war" during the second and third sessions.
- The final session provides cardinals with an update on the Synod on Synodality implementation. The consistory concludes June 29 with Mass for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, when the Pope will impose Pallia on new metropolitan archbishops.
- Although some observers expected liturgical discussions, Cardinals noted these are unlikely in the near future. Starting next year, the Pope intends to extend future consistories to three or four days for more substantive dialogue.
