MEXICO is introducing a constitutional reform banning candidates for president and governor from dual citizenship. The government claims that it is protecting sovereignty, while critics claim that it is a political showdown.
The constitutional reform that establishes as a new requirement the candidates to contend for the presidency of the Republic and the governments of the states to have exclusively Mexican nationality, advanced with great speed in the local legislatures and next Tuesday will be declared valid by the chambers of deputies and senators, and will be sent to the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF).
The reform is on the verge of approval. Incumbent President Claudia Sheinbaum explained the decision as a protection against foreign interference. However, it is believed to be aimed at some billionaires and politicians preparing for the upcoming presidential elections.
