Brazil ex-President Bolsonaro wins big without his name on the ballot
The Bolsonaro family won across the ballot, and the Liberal Party nearly doubled its Senate bloc to 28 seats, analysts said.
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro scored an upset victory over President Luiz Inacio Lula in Sunday's first round of the presidential election, emerging as the favorite for the second-round vote on October 25.
President Jair Bolsonaro, currently under house arrest serving a 27-year sentence for a coup plot, watched from confinement as his ideological movement emerged stronger than ever despite his legal constraints.
Four family members won public office on Sunday, including Michelle Bolsonaro, Carlos, Renato, and Jair Renan. Their Liberal Party nearly doubled its bloc in the 81-seat Senate to 28 seats, the strongest result since Brazil's 1980s return to democracy.
Bolsonaro and Lula secured 47% and 45% of Sunday's vote respectively, heading to a second-round runoff. Think Policy said Lula's path to victory is "very difficult, but not impossible."
If Flavio wins, Congress could prioritize amnesty for the elder Bolsonaro next year. Liberal Party President Valdemar told Reuters that Jair Bolsonaro could once again play a role in government under his son.
