Congo Ebola outbreak may be worst ever, Africa CDC says
More than 800 cases and 192 deaths have been reported, and officials warn weak tracing and burial practices could drive further spread.
- On Tuesday, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya warned the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could surpass the deadliest on record, which killed more than 11,000 people. Government data showed 837 confirmed cases and 196 deaths.
- The Africa CDC is seeking $518 million to contain the virus, though it has received less than $100 million. Kaseya warned that failing to invest within four weeks could escalate costs to $7.5 billion.
- Bruno Michon, operations manager for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, warned the epidemic could last one year. Teams currently follow only 12% of exposed people, complicating efforts to track the disease's magnitude.
- Authorities are missing more than 26,000 people who may have been exposed, raising transmission fears. Neighbouring Uganda has recorded 19 cases, including 14 among individuals who had traveled from the DRC.
- Researchers recently published a study in the Lancet Infectious Diseases estimating the outbreak's scale remains uncertain due to late detection. Experts like Ruth McCabe stress that data gaps make comparing this strain's trajectory to previous epidemics extremely difficult.
