Confirmed Ebola Cases in Congo Reach 282 as Survivors Describe Their Recoveries
On Sunday, May 31, 2026, Congo reported at least 282 confirmed Ebola cases as World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus opened a 42-bed treatment center in Bunia.
The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo virus, which currently lacks approved vaccines or treatments; remote locations and armed violence in hot spots complicate the response.
Five health workers, including Baraka Bulambulu and Ezo Etienne, have recovered from the disease; "Coming out of this illness alive is an indescribable joy," Bulambulu said.
Dr. Dieudonne Mwamba Kazadi, director-general of Congo's National Institute of Public Health, called the recoveries "a victory worth celebrating" as containment efforts continue.
The outbreak remains focused in Congo's eastern Ituri province, where 264 cases have been recorded; neighboring Uganda reported nine cases and closed its border.
Number of confirmed cases in the country rose to 282, with 42 deaths, after recording 19 new positive results, according to data reported by the Ministry of Communications
