Conditions cool after B.C. wildfires double in a week with 67,000 lighting strikes
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, AUG 5 – More than 850 wildfires have ignited this season with 85% contained under four hectares, aided by new fire detection technologies, officials said.
- The Wesley Ridge wildfire near Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island remains out of control, covering 5.3 square kilometres as of Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
- Hot, dry weather and thunderstorms caused more than 67,000 lightning strikes last week, which doubled the number of active wildfires in British Columbia.
- Crews, including 164 firefighters with eight helicopters, improved containment lines Monday to protect homes and infrastructure along Highway 4 near the blaze.
- Meteorologist Michael Kuss said, "It has been incredibly dry" and noted wet weather this week will aid firefighting but comes with lightning strike risks.
- The cooler, wetter weather system expected to exit by Thursday should help firefighting efforts temporarily, but fire risks remain due to returning dry conditions.
