Concord Man Suspected In Murder Of Parents Dead At Martinez Jail
Kirk Richardson, charged with fatally shooting his parents, died after repeatedly injuring himself in jail; authorities are investigating his death amid his history of mental illness.
- On Thursday, Kirk Laroy Richardson, 61, was found dead in his jail cell at the Martinez Detention Facility while held for the Dec. 31 killings of William Richardson, 90, and Joyce Richardson, 85.
- Richardson was charged last week with murdering Joyce Richardson, 85, and William Richardson, 90, in a Dec. 31 shooting at their Concord, California home, and neighbors and court records cite longstanding threats and weapons seized from the Concord home.
- Early Thursday morning, jail medical staff responded at about 5:38 a.m. after Richardson repeatedly banged his head, and medics released him back to the Martinez Detention Facility at 8:30 a.m. where he received medication.
- The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said the cause of death has not yet been determined, and Richardson faced 50 years to life if convicted; both offices will jointly investigate under a fatal-incident protocol.
- The county's hospital didn’t immediately respond Friday about Richardson’s medical clearance, which officials say occurred after he was released at 8:30 a.m. and given medication, as the DA investigates the incident protocol.
