The archaeologist involved in the excavation of possible bone remains of the French musketeer d’Artagnan in a church near Maastricht did not adhere to the “standard applicable within the profession for archaeological excavations,” the Municipality of Maastricht reports in a letter on Friday. According to the municipality, this has resulted in “a significant loss of informational value” surrounding the excavation.
According to those involved, major mistakes were made during the excavation, as a result of which a significant portion of the bone material may be unusable.
