CBSE Plan for 2026-27: Three-Language Formula From Class 6; Two Levels of Maths, Science for Class 9
The overhaul adds two-level math and science in Class 9 and makes art, vocational and physical education mandatory in Classes 9 and 10.
- On Friday, the Central Board of Secondary Education rolled out its new curriculum, implementing a three-language formula from Class 6 and a two-level system for mathematics and science in Class 9 starting in the 2026-27 academic session.
- These changes align with the National Education Policy 2020, which recommends students learn three languages up to Class 10; the board organized language subjects into a structured framework requiring at least two languages native to India.
- For mathematics and science, students will take a standard 80-mark exam, while those opting for higher proficiency can choose an optional advanced paper. "Students must mandatorily take the standard exam, while the advanced paper remains optional," a board official said.
- This roadmap extends up to 2031, when the three-language formula becomes fully operational for Class 10 board exams. Additionally, the board plans to introduce Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence by the 2027-28 academic session.
- Anil Kapasi, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Arihant Academy, suggests early exposure to artificial intelligence helps create "future-ready scholars." Beyond core subjects, the board is also making art and vocational education mandatory in classes 9 and 10.
