Police Arrest Teen for Injuring 3 Horses with 'Sharp Object' at Equestrian Event
Police say the teen had access to the barn and used a knife, leaving the horses with injuries that could keep them from competing.
- Early Saturday, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrested a teenage girl for intentionally injuring three horses with a sharp object at a barn near South Point Casino during the National Barrel Horse Association Professional's Choice Vegas Super Show.
- Investigators with the LVMPD Animal Cruelty Section identified the teen as a suspect after determining she had access to the barn, where officers responded at approximately 2:07 a.m. Saturday to a report of injured horses.
- The suspect was transported to Clark County Juvenile Hall and booked on 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming, or torturing an animal, plus three counts of felony malicious destruction of private property valued over $5,000.
- Addressing the incident, the National Barrel Horse Association issued a statement regarding the "mistreatment of a limited number of equine athletes by an event competitor," noting all appropriate steps ensure the horses' well-being.
- Although injuries are not considered life-threatening, the horses remain unable to compete in the show, which began Friday and runs through Sunday, as the association requests respect during this sensitive time.
