Communities across the country unite to provide free food amid SNAP benefits delays
Communities nationwide have created free food pantries and food trucks to aid people affected by SNAP delays, with over 300 people served in some locations.
- Last Sunday, AJ Owen and his sons, ages seven and nine, began offering free food in their Whitehall, Pennsylvania front yard to help people losing their SNAP benefits, while local volunteers and food trucks also distributed groceries.
- With SNAP benefits expiring and a federal shutdown, Krista Gay, resident and pantry organizer, and Christian Rogerson, her husband, created a front-yard pantry as some 112,000 San Francisco residents await aid.
- Lines formed around blocks as the Whitehall effort went viral online with over 12 million views, and Owen said `and I had for ten days, she said`.
- San Francisco's Human Services Agency rolled out a CalFresh emergency grocery card program, saying mail with activation codes should arrive by Wednesday, while SF‑Marin Food Bank matches gifts up to $80,000.
- The movement has spread nationwide, with many tagging Owen and sharing efforts, while Rogerson said `all it takes is some bins, cardboard, and a marker and tape`; volunteers and grocery drivers fill delivery routes serving approximately 15 households.
