Washington Commanders Are Retiring Hall of Famer John Riggins' No. 44 on Nov. 8

The Washington Commanders announced Thursday they will retire Hall of Fame running back John Riggins' No. 44 jersey during their November 8 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Nicknamed "The Diesel," Riggins fueled the organization to its first Super Bowl win after the 1982 season and remains the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 7,742 yards and 85 touchdowns.
Riggins established "Riggo's Rangers," a foundation supporting military veterans for decades, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
After being estranged from the franchise under former owner Dan Snyder, Riggins and other alumni reconnected with the team when Josh Harris purchased the organization in 2023.
Joining legends like Sammy Baugh and Sean Taylor, Riggins becomes the seventh player in team history to have his number retired; owner Josh Harris said he "helped define one of the most successful eras in our history.
