The comet 3I/Atlas has been under observation for a long time. The study of recent months has led scientists to reveal that there are simple water and organic molecules. The images collected by the space telescope Spherex of Nasa and the Observatory Swift, also of the U.S. space agency, have allowed to analyze the composition of the material that surrounds the nucleus of the comet. Already in June, the astronomical observatory Rubin in Chile had…
Organic molecules important for the origin of life have been observed on the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS by American astronomers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. They discovered the elements after the body approached the Sun. Thanks to the escape of different chemicals, the SPHEREx space telescope took different colored images.
In July 2025, an object from beyond our Solar System briefly crossed our planetary neighbourhood. Named 3I/ATLAS, this interstellar comet carries ice and gas formed around another star several billion years ago. Its passage offers a rare opportunity to directly analyze the chemistry of a distant system without leaving Earth orbit. A team of researchers from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland studied its activity thro…
